CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s (WVDEP) Adopt-A-Highway program and Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP), in conjunction with the state Department of Highways, named St. Clara resident Guy Simmons as its 2019 Adopt-A-Highway Volunteer of the Year Saturday at its Volunteer Appreciation Day event at Canaan Valley Resort in Tucker County.

Simmons, 94, has been a member of the St. Clara Adopt-A-Highway program since its inception in 1989, and has participated in every AAH cleanup. He also cleans a one-mile stretch of road adjacent to St. Clara.

“Guy has been a catalyst in the St. Clara community for all these years, and his tireless participation, work ethic, and willingness to lend a helping hand is a shining example of dedication and commitment for the people of St. Clara and West Virginia,” said WVDEP AAH coordinator Kim Smith.

Simmons helped organize the bi-annual cleanups for most of his 30 years of service, while also maintaining a farm and 15 head of cattle, and participating in several cattle-related organizations. He also grinds his own cornmeal and shares it with the community every fall.
