SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — Delegate Heather Tully, R-Nicholas, recently joined first responders throughout her district to present grant funds to help them carry out their duties.

Tully, who serves as vice chairwoman of the House Health and Human Resources Committee as well as on the House Committee on Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services, was able to help secure the funds through an economic development grant. She presented the funds to the Summersville Fire Department, the Wilderness Fire Department and the Summersville Police Department throughout the month of August.

“My early career experience as a critical care nurse in a Level I trauma ICU impressed upon me the importance of emergency preparedness,” Delegate Tully said. “The ability to respond swiftly and efficiently can often determine the outcome between life and death.”

The Summersville Fire Department received $30,000 for a technical rope rescue initiative, which will help equip the department for emergency responses throughout the region.

“Our surrounding areas provide extremely attractive terrain for rock climbers and hikers, and with the addition of the newest WV State Park at Summersville Lake geared toward rock climbing, we are expecting to see even more rock climbing visitors to our area,” Tully said. “I was proud to make this funding request on the Summersville FD’s behalf.”

The Wilderness Fire Department received $2,400 to equip their newest fire engine with a specialized valve that will allow it to draw water from sources such as large-diameter fire hoses as well as creeks and streams.

“Chief Noah Allen is a fine, upstanding young man who serves the community with efficiency and pride,” Tully said. “Our first responders often face high stakes and in times of urgency the ability to act decisively and adeptly is paramount, so it was my honor to be able to assist Wilderness in this small way.”

The Summersville Police Department received $29,100 that will go toward equipment such as new soft armor vests, Special Response Team equipment and training.

“Education, equipment and training are essential for emergency preparedness,” Tully said. “These funds will help ensure our officers have the advanced training and equipment they need to keep our community and residents as safe as possible.”
