For The Charleston Tennis Club
Charleston – The Charleston Tennis Club will celebrate a century of tennis, tradition and community during its 100th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, June 13, marking 100 years since a group of Charleston residents came together with a shared passion for the game and founded what would become one of West Virginia’s premier racquet sports facilities.
From its humble beginnings in Kanawha City, the Charleston Tennis Club has grown into a thriving recreational destination situated on 25 scenic acres in Charleston. Today, the club serves more than 500 member families and features six indoor tennis courts, 11 outdoor tennis courts, six pickleball courts, a swimming pool and a fitness center.
“For 100 years, the Charleston Tennis Club has been much more than a place to play tennis,” said Steve Rubin, Charleston Tennis Club Board of Directors member. “What began as a group of Charlestonians coming together to enjoy the sport has grown into a cornerstone of our community. Generations of families have learned, competed and built lifelong friendships here, and we’re proud to celebrate the rich history and traditions that have shaped the club over the last century.”
“This centennial celebration is not only about honoring our past, but also looking ahead to the future,” said Sarah Korwan, Charleston Tennis Club Board of Directors member. “Today, the Charleston Tennis Club serves hundreds of families and o[ers opportunities for people
of all ages to stay active, connect with others and enjoy racquet sports. As we begin our second century, we’re committed to continuing that legacy and ensuring the club remains a vibrant part of the Charleston community for generations to come.”
Throughout its history, Charleston Tennis Club has played an important role in the sport both locally and nationally. The club once hosted the prestigious West Virginia Sweet
Sixteen Tennis Tournament and welcomed many notable players to its courts, including tennis legend Chris Evert and West Virginia native Anne White. The club is also proud to have helped develop Peachy Kellmeyer, a Charleston native and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame who grew up playing on the club’s courts.
The centennial celebration will feature activities for members and their families, including a full day of youth programming and recreational activities. The festivities will culminate Saturday evening with a special anniversary dinner, live music and a commemorative program honoring the club’s rich history and lasting impact on the Charleston community.
As Charleston Tennis Club enters its second century, club leaders remain committed to fostering a welcoming environment where individuals and families can build friendships, stay active and enjoy the lifelong benefits of racquet sports.
