Registration deadline is Jan. 4
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.VA. — With an election on the calendar and budget, education and technology issues expected to arise during the West Virginia legislative session, 2016 promises to be an interesting news year.
The state’s journalists will not want to miss the The West Virginia Legislative Lookahead on Friday, Jan. 8, at Marshall University’s South Charleston Campus.
The Lookahead is sponsored by The Associated Press, Marshall University and West Virginia Press Association.
This annual preview of the year’s biggest governmental news stories gives editors and reporters a chance to prep for the legislative session and the election.
All West Virginia journalists and media representatives are encouraged to attend the event.
Organizers hope to offer insight into the key issues that will be addressed at the 2016 legislative session as well as provide networking opportunities.
Sessions planned for 2016 include:
- State of the State – exploring regional needs and politics in three West Virginia regions – North, South and Eastern Panhandle.
- Common Core
- Expansion of Broadband in West Virginia
Confirmed speakers include John Deskins of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research; Sen. John Unger, State Superintendent of Schools Michael Martirano; Sen. Chris Walters; AFT-WV President Christine Campbell and Communications Workers of America representative Elaine Harris.
Organizers are also working on a forum with West Virginia gubernatorial candidates.
The day starts at 9 a.m. in the library at Marshall’s South Charleston campus and will conclude by 3:30 p.m.
The registration fee of $15 per person will include a boxed lunch. The registration deadline is 5 p.m., Jan. 4, 2016.
Early registration is necessary to ensure seating and the catering.
