ROMNEY, W.Va. — The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB) has announced the launch of AC² (Academy for Career Connections), a transformative transition program designed to prepare Deaf, Hard of Hearing (DHH), and Visually Impaired (VI) students for successful post-secondary careers. This innovative initiative marks a significant  enhancement in career and technical education (CTE) at WVSDB.

Beginning this academic year, students in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to join one of five specialized CTE academies:

1. ProStart Culinary/Hospitality: Learn the fundamentals of cooking and hospitality management in a hands-on environment.

2. Building Maintenance and Operations: Gain practical skills in building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry.

3. Personal Career Readiness: Prepare for post-secondary or workforce with essential career skills, including resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace etiquette.

4. Business Enterprise: Develop business and entrepreneurial skills through real-world projects and simulations.

5. Music: Explore the world of music through performance, theory, and technology.

A key component of AC² is a collaboration with local businesses and Eastern Community and Technical College. This groundbreaking alliance demonstrates a commitment to providing enhanced educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Through this partnership, WVSDB graduates will have a direct pathway to Eastern, ensuring a seamless transition into post-secondary education.

AC² is a pivotal step in our mission to ensure that every student, regardless of their hearing or visual impairments, is equipped with the skills and experiences necessary for a successful transition to adulthood,” said Clayton Burch, Superintendent of the West Virginia Schools for the  Deaf and the Blind. “Our specialized academies are designed to bridge the gap between  education and employment, providing our students with the tools they need to achieve their career goals and thrive in their chosen fields.”
