WVU  announces heart transplant center

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —  As the knowledge, experience and technology at WVU Medicine grow, so do the needs of the people of West Virginia.

After years of improving the capabilities of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Ruby Memorial Hospital, the doctors and leaders of WVU Medicine are ready to take it to the highest level by adding a center for heart transplants in the coming months.

“It’s a final quantum leap forward,” Vinay Badhwar, chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery for WVU Medicine, said. “We have done all the other aspects, including an artificial heart program which is the first in the state; artificial circulatory support program, the first in the state. So we look forward to doing the first heart transplant in the history of the state.”
