MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mike Oliverio, who served in both the West Virginia House of Delegates and Senate as a Democrat, will seek the Republican nomination for the state’s 13th Senatorial District.

Oliverio told The Dominion Post on Monday that he intends to file candidacy papers this afternoon with the West Virginia Secretary of State.

“I was in the Legislature in the past and served for several years. I’ve missed it, and I feel like I’m ready to return,” Oliverio said. “The political climate in West Virginia has changed a lot in the years I’ve been out, and I think my experience and expertise can be brought to the table to help with some pretty important decisions that will have to be made in the next several years.”

The changing political climate is evident in the state’s shift to Republican legislative majorities. Oliverio said his beliefs have not changed; he simply feels he can get more done from within the majority party.

“I’m the same guy. In the past, I was referred to as a conservative Democrat, so I’m going to be the same person. I just think I can best represent my constituents if I’m part of that majority party,” Oliverio said. “I think that’s going to be the case for, potentially, some years to come.”
