The 128-page book, which is now available for pick-up at The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, 1500 Main St. in Wheeling, couldn’t have come out any better. The book’s cost is $39.95, and would make the perfect holiday gift for a friend or relative, or serve as a great coffee table adornment at your home.

“Through the Lens” highlights the excellence of veteran photojournalists P. Andrew Lloyd, Art Limann and Scott McCloskey, whose photographs have graced the pages of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register and The Times Leader for the past 50 years.

Several hundred color and black and white pictures, ranging from stars on the stage at the Capitol Music Hall such as Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Loretta Lynn to iconic machines such as the Silver Spade, are featured. The area’s disasters — Wegee Creek, Hurricane Ivan, the Imperial Display fire — also are documented, as are numerous feature photographs of youngsters doing interesting things.

Several months of work by our editors and photographers went into the book’s production, and the end result is something that’s sure to be a talking point at holiday parties this season.

“Everyone who’s seen or purchased a copy of ‘Through the Lens’ has been awed by the photos we chose, and the history of the Ohio Valley they represent,” said Managing Editor John McCabe, who oversaw the book’s production.

“There’s just so much variety, so many memories, and some of them touch on lost Ohio Valley history — photos dedicated to the demolition of Wheeling High School, to Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy, to railroad bridges coming down, for example. It’s hard to describe just how good the book turned out, and we’re so pleased to be able to share these moments of Ohio Valley life with our readers.”

Books also can be ordered online by visiting our website, theintelligencer.net, and clicking on the “Through the Lens” link on the right-hand side of the page.
