The banners, produced by Glenville State College, depict industry employees and outline the impact of the newspaper industry in West Virginia. The BNC Banquet Saturday night attracted about 150 people. More than 200 people participating in WVPA Convention 2013 during the weekend. The WVPA Foundation Golf Tournament featured several teams. Tournament organizer Alan Waters, at right, publisher of the Daily Athenaeum in Morgantown and a member of the WVPA board of Directors, teamed up with Rod Friend, Randy Christopher and Doug Hunt for the event. Glenville Democrat and Pathfinder Publisher Dave Corcoran, who finished his term as president of the WVPA on Saturday, enjoyed the BNC Banquet with Editor Dendra Miller and his son Patrick and his wife, Morgan. The Ogden Newspaper team at the WVPA Foundation Tournament featured, from left, Alex Marshall, publisher of The Weirton Daily Times, Perry Nardo, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register and president of the WVPA, Jim Spanner, publisher of the Parkersburg News and Sentinel and a WVPA board member, and Brian Clutter, publisher of The Wetzel Chronicle and the Tyler Star News and a WVPA Convention volunteer. The Eastern Panhandle newspapers showed their skills during the WVPA Foundation Golf Tournament. The winning team included Chris Kinsler, editor of The Journal in Martinsburg, Craig Bartoldson, publisher of The Journal and The Shepherdstown Chronicle, and Jim and Sandy Buzzerd, editor of the Morgan Messenger in Berkeley Springs. The Dominion Post golf team included Eric Tomlinson, editor Geri Ferrara, managing editor Pam Queen and Lee Queen. Funds raised at the WVPA Foundation Golf Tournament help provide scholarships, internships and educational programming at the WVPA conventions. West Virginia Press Association President Dave Corcoran urges all newspapers to champion reading during his final remarks at Saturday’s general membership meeting at Oglebay Resort. Corcoran, who had many initiatives in his year as president, promised to continue his “President’s Pen” column with a “Past President’s Pen” column. The first will be published Aug. 16, 2013. John McCabe, Brad McElhinny and Steve Buttry talk about “Preparing the Modern Journalist” during a Saturday morning seminar. Andrew Springer, senior editor of Social Media for ABC News, discusses practical and effective social media strategies that can help position a newspaper for greater audience and increased revenue potential. The panel – Practical Social Media Strategies to Build Audience and Revenue Online – featured Springer and Matt See, manager of social media for the American Public University System and consultant for the Hampshire Review and other See media operations. It was a topic of discussion throughout the remainder of the convention. Lyell Clay and Hollendonner were inducted. Hollendonner spent a large portion of his career with Ogden Newspapers. Ogden Nutting, at left, spoke about Hollendonner during the event. Other Nutting family members include, from center to the right, Bill Nutting, Bob Nutting, who spoke about the future of newspapers during the President’s Reception, and Snookie Nutting, Ogden’s wife and Bill and Bob’s mother. Fred Earley, president of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia, discusses what impact the next phase of the Affordable Care Act will have on West Virginia businesses and talks about insurance options.
