PHILIPPI, W.Va. — The first phase of the Sago Mine Memorial is complete, according to Philippi Main Street Director Tammy Stemple.

That initial phase resulted in a bronze piece depicting miners awaiting rescue. The finished bronze piece is currently on display in the window of Mullens & Mullens Law Office on Main Street in Philippi.

Phase II of the memorial will provide a stone marker on which the bronze piece will be mounted in addition to landscaping for the outdoor memorial. The Sago Mine Memorial will be located in the Blue and Gray Park at the Covered Bridge in Philippi.

Philippi Main Street hopes to have Phase II of the memorial completed by the 10-year anniversary of the mine tragedy, on Jan. 2. To secure the approximate $10,000 necessary to complete the memorial work, Main Street again reminds citizens that it is collecting donations for this community memorial for its miners.
