MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — While reading Suzanne Collins’ novel “The Hunger Games,” seventh-graders at Mountaineer Middle School attempted to replicate the story with a competition of their own.

Carrie Harris’ students held contests to raise money for Pet Helpers, a nonprofit organization in Fairmont that helps animals in need.

“We collected around $1,600, including gift cards,” Harris said. “We got dog food, puppy training pads, toys and everything in between.”

The class was also visited by Granger, a bluetick coonhound, to help celebrate their achievement.
