Not just for kids

Journal photo by John McVey Mike Hite, Martinsburg’s parking attendant, on his rounds Monday, riding the Parking Department’s new Zappy 3 Pro-Flex electrical scooter along South College Street. At their meeting Thursday, City Council members approved the purchase of two, year-old scooters at a total cost of $500 for the Parking Department. The scooter can go 24 miles per charge and reach speeds of 13 miles per hour. Hite said it has trouble on steep hills, though. It is sidewalk legal. He plans to continue walking the parking-meter beat in downtown, but use the scooter on the outskirts. It takes him two hours to walk the complete route. The scooters will be available to other departments, such as the police department to patrol during special events downtown like Bike Night.
