Frog jumping featured in Rivesville

RIVESVILLE, W.Va.. — The Rivesville Fourth of July weekend event included the second annual frog-jumping contest.

The event also featured bands, food, vendors and free games for kids in addition to the frog jumping.

According to Rivesville mayor Jim Hershman, the Rivesville Fourth of July celebration is held a day later on purpose.

“We always have it on the off day from Fairmont to give the people of Rivesville the opportunity to go to Fairmont and give the people from Fairmont the opportunity to come to Rivesville,” Hershman said.

Last year, 31 children signed up for the frog-jumping contest, said John Uveges. Uveges has been in charge of the event since it began last year.

According to Uveges, 50 children, all under the age of 12, signed up to race frogs on a three-lane track this year.

“All they do is take the frog out of the pitcher and then tap (the frog) and get him to the finish line,” Uveges said.

The frogs were caught locally and were placed in water before and after the races. The frogs were also cooled down by water that would spray on them and the children during the contest…
