FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Landen Barkley, of Rivesville Elementary School, is the 2014 -2015 West Virginia State winner of the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program.

Barkley grew a 15.2 pound cabbage according to a press release from Bonnie Plants, the national plant wholesaler who sponsors the cabbage program.

The Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program was started in 2002. The company sends free oversized cross cabbage plants to participating third-grade classrooms, according to the company website.

Each teacher submitted a class winner which is then entered into a random drawing. Each state’s director of agriculture randomly selects a winner from the drawing. The winner then receives a $1,000 scholarship, according to the company website. Barkley was the winner of West Virginia’s top prize.
