W.Va. boys see tough loss in soccer semifinals

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — Losing is bad enough, but losing and wondering “what if” is apparently worse.

Two teams from West Virginia, the West Virginia Futbol Club 2002 B Black U12 Boys (Huntington-Charleston) and MUSC Shox U19 Girls (Morgantown) dropped close games Monday in the semifinals of the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships at the soggy Barboursville Soccer Complex.

Lynbrook/East Rockaway SC Sting (NY-E) defeated the WVFC 12U boys, 2-1, in overtime when the New York squad scored on a penalty kick. The WVFC coaches were less than satisfied with the explanation that a trip occurred to set up the penalty kick, which was made by Eligio Guarino.

“It was a tough loss,” WVFC coach Alex Fatovic said. “It’s a tough pill to swallow when it ends that way, but it’s a tremendous learning experience…
