CHARLESTON, W.Va. — National Newspaper Week – Oct. 4-11 – celebrates the “Power of the Press.”
The West Virginia Press Association issues the following statement in recognition of National Newspaper Week:
“Here in West Virginia, the “power of the press” resides in the readers of our newspapers. From the announcement of their birth through the obituary noting their passing, and each milestone along the journey, West Virginians are part of their local newspaper. In all 55 counties, residents invest in their local newspaper. Yes, they purchase print and online subscriptions and advertising, but they also invest their time, interest and trust. They count on the local newspaper for timely, accurate and thorough coverage of the events that impact their lives. Most importantly, West Virginians count on the local newspaper to serve as their watchdog, to protect their interests and safety even — or perhaps especially — when they can’t be there. Is there a greater trust, a more important responsibility or a more powerful role? That is the true power of the press.”
