Editorial: West Virginians should show support with Small Business Saturday

Those of you braving the Black Friday shopping crowds today might wish you had waited a day — stayed out of the herd, as it were — to shop with a little less of the madness, on Small Business Saturday.

Each year, smaller, locally owned, brick and mortar retailers take advantage of the Saturday after Thanksgiving to remind shoppers of the many advantages to stopping by the establishments owned by our friends and neighbors.

Certainly there is nothing wrong with spending a little money with the big guys — they employ local folks, too — but on Small Business Saturday, it is likely you will be shopping with the owner, general manager, head salesperson, perhaps even the maker of the products for sale … all wrapped into one person. And much of the money spent on Small Business Saturday is almost immediately and directly reinvested into our communities. …
