Editorial: Drug abuse prevention, education key for West Virginia

Some children are already using drugs at the age of 12 or 13, according to studies like the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. These kids, researchers estimate, are likely using even earlier.

If abuse continues into later adolescence, abusers typically advance into other drugs, drug abuse.gov reports.

Prevention in the form of education is key to reducing the number of youth who abuse substances.

Berkeley County has taken the first step in adding another weapon to its arsenal in the battle against the opioid epidemic. On Thursday, the Berkeley County Council approved allowing the Berkeley County Recovery Resource Center to pursue a grant that would help the center expand its addiction prevention efforts in Berkeley County Schools. …
