FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Tonight’s the night.
It’s the type of night that doesn’t come up very often for West Virginia University — maybe once every 10 or 20 years. Or maybe even more.
WVU last won a national postseason tournament in 1941 — 74 years ago. That was the NIT when it carried similar weight as the NCAA does now.
The Mountaineers are playing the No. 1 basketball team in the country tonight in the Sweet Sixteen. And there are no ifs, ands or buts about Kentucky being No. 1. They’ve played 36 games and won them all. Thats 36-0, and most experts are predicting that the Wildcats will be 40-0 when the NCAA Tournament winds up April 6.
Forty and zero. No major college basketball team in the country has ever posted such a record. Not a one. And basketball has been around for many, many years.
Sports Illustrated recently printed a cover photo of three of the Kentucky Wildcat players, and under the question “Who Can Catch the Cats?” lies a possible answer: “The contenders — Arizona, Duke, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin and Virginia.” Well, Northern Iowa and Virginia have been eliminated. That leaves the other three possibilities.
But there is no mention at all of West Virginia…
