Youth soccer tourney returns to Huntington area

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The US Youth Soccer Region I Championships return to the Tri-State this week, a tournament which brings thousands of talented young soccer players and their fans, a significant economic impact and a test of the logistics skills of local organizers.

The soccer tournament, which also was conducted locally in 2009 and 2010, is the largest multi-day event the area has handled, according to Tyson Compton, president of the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“The fact that it is an event of this magnitude is so exciting,” Compton said. “We are incredibly happy to welcome everyone back. Typically, these types of events are held in much larger cities.

“The things we heard last time from our visitors was how polite the people from the restaurants and community were and just their hospitality. What they loved most about our city was here they felt important.”

More than 260 state championship teams and wild-card entries from 15 state associations from the eastern part of the country will compete. The nearly 5,000 players, coaches and tournament officials, along with an estimated 15,000 family members and other spectators, will provide the area an estimated economic impact of more than $15 million…
