MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — As the WVU men’s basketball team exited the WVU Coliseum floor Monday night, they were surrounded by hundreds of WVU students who screamed at the top of their lungs and bounced around in celebration.
It was the best the Mountaineers were guarded all night.
WVU put on a clinic against 11th-ranked Iowa State, 102-77, in front of 8,177 fans.
“It shocked me during the game,” WVU guard Terry Henderson said. “I looked up and saw we were up by 30. I never would have imagined that.”
The Mountaineers (15-10, 7-5 Big 12), a team that was thought to be struggling for a second consecutive season, knocked off their second Top 25-ranked team of the season.
The NCAA tournament is no longer out of the question after knocking off the Cyclones (18-5, 6-5), who fell behind by 19 points at halftime and could never get as close as 15 points in the second half.
“From start to finish, it was just a poor effort on our end,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We let them come out and get away too comfortable…”
