WV House leaders have ‘good meeting’ on impasse

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — While the legislature remains in a holding pattern in trying to fix a $271 million budget hole that must be filled by June 30, a glimmer of teamwork appeared in the House of Delegates Wednesday.

House Minority Leader Tim Miley, D-Harrison, said he “had a good meeting” with Speaker of the House Tim Armstead, R-Kanawha, Tuesday, after a three-hour floor session that killed the only revenue measure to be discussed so far in this extraordinary session.

“I think there’s positive movement you’ll see in the next day or two that perhaps before yesterday seemed to be at an impasse,” Miley said. He would not be specific about those negotiations, saying he did not want to “damage the likelihood of success for any of them.”

Democrats who spoke on the House floor Tuesday said they would vote against the bill because it wasn’t enough to either deter smoking by young people or to fix the Public Employees Insurance Agency’s own financial crisis…
