Wood County board OKs ATV park construction

VOLCANO, W.Va. — The Mountwood Park board members voted to approve the creation of a 605-acre all-terrain vehicle park on the north side of U.S. 50 during its Monday meeting, officials said.

Construction of the ATV park is expected to begin in the next two weeks, said Mountwood Park Board President Bob Buchanan. Officials hope the area will open sometime in late July or early August of this year, Buchanan said.

The board approved the proposal to turn the park’s 605 acres north of U.S. 50 into an ATV park which will operate on an annual “pay once, ride all year” status, Buchanan said. The ATV park will encompass all of the park territory north of U.S. 50 with the exception of the existing campground area, he said.

“We believe this park will keep our campground full at all times,” Buchanan said. “The park will help turn Mountwood into the complete family destination for Wood and surrounding counties,” he said.

The ATV park will consist of nearly 1,000 miles of trails on the 605 acres, Buchanan said.

Campers at the existing campground area are not expected to be able to hear the ATVs running on the trails due to natural barriers between the closest trail and the campground, Buchanan said.

“We anticipate that people coming to the ATV park will spend nights and eat meals locally, bringing economic growth to the entire area,” Buchanan said.

The planned ATV park will take care of itself, Buchanan said. The group running the ATV park, Mountwood Park ATV Adventures, will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of trails, collecting of fees, and for providing insurance for the area, Buchanan said…
