HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 5.7 percent in July 2016, the lowest it has been since December 2008 just before the Great Recession started driving up joblessness in the state.
WorkForce West Virginia said about 4,300 more people were employed in July than in the month before, while the number of people in the labor market without jobs fell by about 2,100 – to a total of 45,000 – compared to June. Compared with a year earlier, 7,400 more people had jobs and about 9,400 fewer were unemployed, the agency said.
June’s unemployment rate was 6.0 percent, while the unemployment rate in July 2015 was 6.9 percent.
The state’s jobless rate in December 2008 was 4.7 percent, but it shot up to 6.5 percent the very next month. It got as high as 10 percent in February 2010…
