State schools chief shares ‘habits’ with Beckley kids

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Dr. Michael Martirano is on tour right now, rolling from county to county and school to school, to see how local educators are doing.

When the state schools superintendent West Virginia walked into Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary, he found three fifth-graders waiting to take him around the school.

As Martirano toured the school, his face lit up at the sight of a poster on the wall.

“You guys study the seven habits of happy people?” he asked. The students explained that their school is a “Leader in Me” school and they use “The Seven Habits of Happy Children” in everything that they do.

“I’ve been using the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for the last 25 years,” Dr. Martirano said. “They’re really good habits. They teach you to be proactive in your thought processes. They teach you to work together and to make sure you’re taking care of everything you need to.

“They guide happy children and give them guidance of how to be effective people in society. That’s really important because that’s one of the chief things we’re trying to instill…
