MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — American Public University System Inc. in Charles Town and Ranson broke into West Virginia’s top 100 private employers this year at No. 83, according to WorkForce West Virginia’s annual report.
The rankings are compiled from March data of each year.
The list was prepared from information provided by employers covered under the unemployment compensation insurance system, through the federal/state Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages Program conducted in West Virginia by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Research, Information and Analysis Division of WorkForce West Virginia, according to the release announcing the top 100 employers for 2014.
WorkForce West Virginia does not publish how many employees the businesses have.
With the opening of its online fulfillment center in the Cumbo Yards Industrial Park in Berkeley County, Macy’s Corporate Services Inc. jumped from No. 73 in 2013 to No. 36 this year.
PNGI Charles Town Gaming LLC, doing business as Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, in Jefferson County remained the largest private employer in the Eastern Panhandle, although it dropped four spots from No. 17 last year to No. 21 this year.
Quad/Graphics Inc. in Berkeley County also dropped in the rankings. It went from No. 52 in 2013 to No. 63 in 2014.
Wal-Mart remained the largest private employer in West Virginia. It has been No. 1 since 1998.
West Virginia United Health System, Charleston Area Medical Center Inc. and Kroger grocery stores maintained the second, third and fourth spots, respectively.
Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. jumped a spot this year from No. 6 to No. 5.
Coal mining giant Murray American Energy Inc. debuted in the top 100 at No. 6.
St. Mary’s Medical Center Inc. and Lowes Home Centers Inc. flipped spots. St. Mary’s went from No. 8 to No. 7 and Lowe’s went from No. 7 to No. 8.
Mentor Management Inc. (The Mentor Network), which provides health and human services, and Res-Care Inc., a private provider of services to people with disabilities and home care company, remained No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.
