BECKLEY, W.Va. — After terminating its lease with West Virginia Recycling Services, the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority will be transporting recyclables to Raleigh County to be processed.
Lisa Suggs, marketing director at the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority, said the facility is well-equipped to handle the extra materials and will continue to do so for as long as necessary.
“We’re so fortunate to have a facility that can handle this type of situation without any problem,” Suggs said.
According to the Charleston Daily Mail, the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority hired West Virginia Recycling Services to handle its day-to-day operations in 2012; however, the Solid Waste Authority’s board voted Oct. 30 to terminate the lease because of the excessive material piled up at the Slack Street facility.
Suggs said the Raleigh County SWA received approximately 45 tons of recyclables from Kanawha County last week, and another load was received Monday.
“We don’t really have an agreement… The extra material is not causing us any extra stress. Our building was built to handle this type of tonnage.”
She said the facility see anywhere from 200 to 300 tons per month in Raleigh County.
Once the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority has reclaimed its facility, Suggs said it will decide whether to make a permanent arrangement with Raleigh County.
“We’re in a ‘help them out’ kind of stage…
