New Bridgeport mayor’s old drug case at issue

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — A Bridgeport citizen called on City Council Monday night to take the necessary steps to remove Mayor Bob Greer from office for pleading guilty to a drug charge almost 30 years ago.

Lowell J. “L.J.” Maxey urged City Council to hire an outside attorney and petition the courts to appoint a three-judge panel to determine whether Greer’s past actions amount to a crime of moral turpitude.

Such a ruling would render Greer ineligible to hold office under the city’s charter, Maxey asserted during the regular council meeting at Bridgeport City Hall.

“You all have the sworn obligation in your oath of office to defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the state of West Virginia and, in this matter, the charter of the city of Bridgeport,” Maxey said.

Greer pleaded guilty in 1987 to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, according to U.S. District Court documents.

Maxey noted that Greer’s plea is no different than that of former Mayor Mario Blount, other than they involve different controlled substances.

Blount, a former pharmacist, pleaded guilty last month to participating in an oxycodone/oxymorphone conspiracy; making a false or fraudulent material omission; and distribution of oxymorphone. He is to be sentenced in January.
