Morgantown firefighters helped a man down from this building on Wall Street on Thursday, after he was found hanging from it on a rope.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — An area lawyer was arrested by the Morgantown Police Department on Thursday for conspiracy and attempted daytime burglary.
According to a criminal complaint, Morgantown Police Officer Kyle Sappington responded to a call of a man hanging from a rope at 75 Wall St.
The building is directly behind the Shell gas station on University Avenue.
He was identified as Joshua Wade Sheets, 28, of Morgantown. According to Monongalia County Magistrate Court records, Sheets is a court-appointed lawyer.
Sheets was hanging by a rope that was attached to the roof of the building, the complaint read. He was unable to move due to his arm being stuck in the rope. The Morgantown Fire Department was called to get him down from the building. Sappington then spoke with Sheets regarding the incident.
According to the complaint, Sheets said “he was trying to rappel from the building because he had seen it on T V. ” Sheets later said he drove his silver Subaru Legacy to the Waterfront Park and walked up to the building.
Officers found the vehicle at the park. Brandon Chad Kirk, 26, of Morgantown, who was sitting in the car, was later charged with conspiracy and attempted daytime burglary. Both Sheets and Kirk agreed to be taken to the Morgantown Police Department for questioning.
“Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that Brandon Kirk and Joshua Sheets conspired to break into a third apartment at 75 Wall St.,” the complaint read.
“Whenever you think you’ve seen everything, you get this,” said Morgantown Fire Department Capt. Larry Speicher.
He said the firefighters got an extendable ladder off one of the trucks and were able to get Sheets to the ground in about five minutes. Speicher said Sheets was not injured. “Once we got him down, we turned around and set up another ladder on the front of the building so the police could access the roof.”
Members of the Morgantown Police Department declined to comment because the incident is still being investigated.
