Docks break away from the Cheat Lake shore on Thursday due to rain thawing the ice.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Several inches of rain hit Monongalia and Preston counties Wednesday, March 4, melting snow and causing flooding.
Mon County officials declared a state of emergency, and county schools sent students home two hours early.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin declared a statewide State of Emergency on Wednesday evening.
AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines said by midafternoon, the Morgantown area received 1.62 inches of rain.
That new precipitation, along with melted snow, left many areas underwater, such as the subterranean bridge over Deckers Creek on White Avenue, near Marilla Park. By midday, the bridge turned into a mini-waterfall with water from Deckers Creek rushing over and around the bridge. Twigs and other debris were stuck on the concrete structure.
More than a few motorists stopped to snap a picture of the sight.
Monongalia County Office of Emergency Management Director Mike Wolfe said two mobile home parks off Tyrone Road, with more than a dozen residences, had flood damage after a culvert overflowed.
