CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two children died after being pulled out of a burning mobile home Sunday morning in Putnam County, firefighters said.
A 3-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy died at Charleston Area Medical Center’s Teays Valley Hospital Sunday, said Mark Lambert, Deputy State Fire Marshal in charge of investigations.
A 7-year-old boy was playing with a lighter in the home and caught the living room curtains on fire, Lambert said.
When Teays Valley firefighters arrived just before 11 a.m. Sunday at the mobile home at 18 Robin Hood Lane in Nottingham Mobile Home Park they found heavy fire burning through the center of the structure, said fire Capt. Jonathan Smoot. There had been an adult and three children inside at the time of the fire, Putnam Sheriff Steve Deweese said in a statement.
The adult at the scene, who was not identified, told firefighters where the children were in the house, Smoot said.
The captain said the four firefighters who responded immediately went to work in trying to get to the children. The children were quickly found in their bedrooms. Both were in cardiac arrest when firefighters found them, he said.
