Some members and artisans are showcasing their state pride at the CCC Museum in Quiet Dell.
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — West Virginia will be 152 years old on Saturday, and many in the region are planning to celebrate the state’s birthday with a variety of different programs, open houses or events.
As residents celebrate, it’s important to remember the efforts of those who helped create the state, said Dr. Robert Anderson, founding and lifetime member of the West Virginia Civil Conservation Corps Museum.
“If it hadn’t been for a lot of brave patriots back in the Civil War days, there would not have been a West Virginia,” he said. “It really is very unlikely that it would have become a state. There was so much in the way of efforts working against West Virginia becoming a state.”
After the war, there was a movement by Confederate sympathizers to pass a resolution to return the new state to Virginia, Anderson said.
“We owe a lot of gratitude and thanks to Francis Pierpont, who is known as the Father of West Virginia for all of his hard work in promoting the concept of an independent state for West Virginia,” Anderson said.
