Huntington vying for ‘Best Communities’ jackpot

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — More details about the city of Huntington’s revitalization efforts for the “America’s Best Communities” competition were unveiled Tuesday as the deadline to submit the plan for the next round approaches.

“This is another important step in our efforts to be recognized as America’s Best Community,” mayor Steve Williams said Tuesday during a press conference. “We are tremendously excited about all that has developed in this project and the directions we have been able to go.”

Huntington is one of 50 quarterfinalists in the nationwide competition, which is sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH, CoBank and The Weather Channel. In the quarterfinal round, Huntington received $50,000 to develop comprehensive strategies to accelerate the revival of its economy and improve quality of life.

 Bryan Chambers, communications director for the city of Huntington, said the final draft of the revitalization plan is nearly complete and will be submitted for the semifinal round before the Nov. 6 deadline.

Up to eight finalists will be awarded $100,000. Three grand prize winners, announced next spring, will receive $3 million for first place, $2 million for second place and $1 million for third place…
