CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Capital Classic was everything it usually is.
West Virginia University (9-1) edged the Marshall Thundering Herd on the scoreboard Sunday, 69-66, for the Mountaineers’ fourth consecutive triumph in the annual men’s basketball matchup of the state’s NCAA Division I teams.
Staying true to form, it was the 14th game in the last 17 meetings decided by 10 points or less.
The game was hotly contested as it normally is with a lot of fouls (56), a lot of foul shots (59), three players fouling out, two technical fouls and 22nd-ranked West Virginia making the plays needed to win.
Marshall (3-6) had the Mountaineers on the run in the second half and received a boost from its contingent of fans in the Charleston Civic Center crowd of 10,749 spectators who were outnumbered by fans wearing the WVU gold and blue by about three to one…
