LEETOWN, W.Va. — The efforts of the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County helped recover a puppy that was stolen from a foster home in Harpers Ferry recently.

The dog, a German Shepherd-Chow Chow mix named Foxie, was discovered near Ocean City, Maryland, after being missing for several weeks, according to Gwen Shelton, AWSJC shelter manager.

Shelton said Foxie was at the shelter briefly several weeks ago before being placed into foster care in a home in Harpers Ferry. About a week later, Shelton said, the woman who was fostering the dog called to report someone had taken it.

“She had a little information about the person and was able to give us enough so that we knew where that person might be headed,” Shelton said. “One of my staff, my animal care coordinator, happened to have a friend in Ocean City Animal Control and alerted her to the problem.”

Shelton said the person who had stolen the dog posted information on Facebook about the animal, which eventually led Ocean City Animal Control to make the discovery. According to the Associated Press, the suspect and the dog were found at a home in Ocean Pines, a community located just outside Ocean City. The report indicated the home was found unsuitable for a pet and the dog was taken into Ocean City Animal Contol’s custody.

Shelton said the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is working with Ocean City Animal Control to find a suitable home for the dog in the Ocean City area. She said social media was a major factor in tracking down the missing dog.

“I was dumbfounded,” Shelton said. “I didn’t think for a minute we’d be able to recover her.”
