West Virginia State University officials learned that Dr. Hazo William Carter Jr., university president emeritus, died. Carter was the longest serving university president when he retired in 2012 after 25 years at the Institute school.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Hazo Carter Jr., who served as president of West Virginia State University from 1987 through 2012, has died.

The university announced Carter’s death late Tuesday evening.

After 25 years as university president, Carter took on the title of president emeritus when current President Brian Hemphill took over at the Institute school.

Kimberly Osborne, a spokeswoman for West Virginia State, said the university learned of his death late Tuesday.

There was limited information available on his death, Osborne said. Neither the cause nor date of his death were known.

His wife of 32 years, Judge Phyllis Carter, died last month. He is survived by their daughter, Angela.

“Dr. Carter was a strong advocate of quality education and believed in the talents and abilities of our faculty and staff to provide West Virginia State students with the very best,” Hemphill said in a release.

“On behalf of the entire State family, my wife Marisela and I extend our deepest sympathies to his daughter Angela and the extended Carter family who have time and again shown their love and commitment for this University,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Angela…”
