A report released Monday says 2008 full-size Ford trucks are the most stolen vehicles in West Virginia.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — According to a report released Monday, 2008 full-size Ford pick-ups are the most stolen vehicles in West Virginia.

The report, from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, examined vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the Center and determined the vehicle make, model and model year most reported stolen in 2013.

Rounding out the top five are 2004 full-size Chevrolet pick-ups at number two; 2004 small size Chevrolet pick-ups, at number three; 1996 Jeep Cherokee/ Grand Cherokees, at number four; and 1999 Chevrolet Cavaliers and 1996 small size Ford pick-ups, tied for number five.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau releases the list to encourage car-owners to take measures to protect their vehicles, spokeswoman Carol Kaplan said.

“A lot of it comes down to common sense,” she said. “Surprisingly, a number of vehicles that are taken are targeted simply because people don’t think of the ordinary steps they can take, such as simply locking the doors and removing their keys from the vehicle. That’s still a major reason why cars are stolen.”

She recommended installing an anti-theft device that sounds an alarm or immobilizes the vehicle during attempted break-ins or a GPS tracker that can locate a vehicle after it is stolen.

She also suggested trying to park in garages and well-lit areas.

Business Insider reported in November of 2012 that full-size Ford pick-ups were also the best-selling vehicles in West Virginia.
