Fayette County school closed, students displaced

OAK HILL, W.Va. — Concerned parents, teachers and community members who gathered Monday night in Oak Hill declared Fayette County a “system-wide facility failure” as news spread that the main Collins Middle School structure has closed for safety reasons.

School officials said the main structure, which held seventh- and eight-graders, was closed Monday after an inspection was conducted last week.

Director of Operations David Keffer said a separate building that houses fifth- and sixth-graders was inspected and considered sound, and students will report to school today. The older students won’t attend today or Wednesday as instructional materials are removed from the main building and logistics are ironed out.

Later this week, officials will move eighth-graders to Oak Hill High School, and seventh-graders will be moved to Fayetteville High.

Collins Middle teacher Debbie Bush said the plan is to have students stationary in classrooms and teachers will rotate among classes.

The last building remaining open on the multi-facility campus has its own issues. The fifth- and sixth-grade structure does not have a cafeteria and there is only one working restroom…
