Fairmont State enrolls 20 percent more freshmen

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Enrollment at Fairmont State University is on the rise.

During Thursday’s FSU Board of Governors meeting, Kaye Widney, the vice president for student services, reported to board members that enrollment numbers are looking good for the start of the 2015 fall semester.

Widney said exact numbers on enrollment have not been finalized, but as of Monday the total headcount of students was 3,754.

Along with the increase in total enrollment, Widney said the number of first-time freshmen has increased tremendously, with 20 percent more students than last year. She added that numbers of transfer students have also increased.

“Even the numbers for students coming back after a period of non-enrollment have edged up,” she said.

Widney also said 29 more veterans at FSU are receiving veterans’ financial aid than last year.

This year’s PROMISE Scholarship recipients attending Fairmont State are also up, according to Widney. She said a total of 602 students are PROMISE scholars this year, an increase of 14 from last year…
