
Former heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield catches a ride from Yeager Airport with Mayor Danny Jones and the mayor’s son, Zach.
Four-time heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield got a lift in the mayor’s 1960 Pontiac Catalina Convertible while visiting Charleston for the USA Boxing Junior National Championships.
Mayor Jones and Zach, an amateur boxer, were also escorting Holyfield to a public meet and greet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.
“He is a lot taller than I thought he would be,” the mayor said. “It also made me realize how tall other boxers like Lennox Lewis are because I know they are taller than Holyfield.”
During the drive, Holyfield talked about his mother, his humble upbringing and previous fights. As someone who had followed Holyfield’s career for most of his life, Jones said he enjoyed getting a firsthand account of fights he had previously seen on TV.
