CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In 1972, John Mork set up the first official office for his company, Energy Corporation of America, in an abandoned coal mine company store in Glenville.
“We had no paid employees,” he said. “I was an employee, I just didn’t get paid.”
Forty-two years later, Mork is helping to guide his 300-employee strong company — which now also has offices in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Montana and New Zealand — from a corner office in a brand new 60,000-square-foot building in Charleston’s NorthGate Business Park.
Energy Corporation of American on Monday celebrated the opening of its new multi-million eastern headquarters, which has sprawling views of Yeager Airport and the hills north of Charleston.
Officially, the company’s corporate headquarters are in Denver, though ECA has maintained an office in Charleston since 1987.
With the boom in the state’s Marcellus shale natural gas region, the company decided it was time to move out of its former home along 56th Street in Kanawha City to a new headquarters.
ECA contracted with Jarrett Construction, Terradon Corp. and Associated Architects to design the new facility, which cost more than $10 million to construct. Though roughly 115 employees made the move from the Kanawha City office, the new building in NorthGate Business Park is designed to accommodate 200.
