MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Reading, writing and arithmetic gave way to foxtrot, rumba and swing Thursday at Brookhaven Elementary.
About 80 fifth-grade students capped a 10-week Dancing Classrooms program with a performance for schoolmates and family.
Last year, Brookhaven’s fifth-graders became the first kids in West Virginia to boogie by the blackboard when the school was selected to host a pilot program through Dancing Classrooms of the Alleghenies.
The program first launched in 1994 in New York City as a not-for-profit project of the American Ballroom Theater Co.
According to Brookhaven Assistant Principal Sheri Petitte, Thursday went “very, very well.”
“It was well attended by family, friends and fellow students.” Petitte said. “They really did a wonderful job…”
