CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Inside Marsh’s Lumber store in Clarksburg Monday, Linda Marsh looked up at the evening news coming through a TV mounted on the wall.
“I wonder if they’re going to show him,” Marsh said.
Among a series of shots of hunters showing off their trophies on the opening day of rifle season, an 8-year-old boy came on the screen, smiling beside a doe lying on a truck bed.
“There he is!” Marsh said, a smile spreading across her face. “Well good for him.”
Her grandson, Derek, had bagged his first doe, Marsh explained.
Despite a bitter cold spell, Derek and many other hunters went out in the early morning Monday, the first day of rifle season, to hunt for that elusive trophy buck.
Hoy Murphy, spokesman for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said an estimated 300,000 hunters were scouring West Virginia’s forests and hillsides for deer Monday.
“I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of any other event in the state of West Virginia where you get 300,000 people out on the same day,” Murphy said…
