Clarksburg’s Waldo Hotel could have new owner

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A former Clarksburg hotel under a condemnation order could have a new owner within the next several months, The Exponent Telegram has learned.

Clarksburg City Manager Martin Howe said he understands that Green Grove Property Management has a contract with an intent to purchase the property from the Vandalia Heritage Foundation.

The developer has not closed on the property to date, Howe said.

“We anticipate, from our communications, for that to happen within the next several months,” the city manager said.

Vandalia President and CEO Laura Kurtz Kuhns didn’t return calls in time for this report.

But Kuhns previously said the nonprofit organization has been in talks with potential developers.

Martin Shaffer, president of the Waldo Hotel Preservation Society, said those talks continue. The Preservation Society has been working with Vandalia to mothball the building until a developer is found.

“We’re negotiating with a developer, and that’s all I can say at this point,” Shaffer said. “Nothing is official and won’t be for many months. We have people in the building getting the debris out.

“Right now, we’re just in negotiations,” Shaffer added. “We have some real interest in the building…”
