A previous planned visit to the county was postponed after permission to use the Welch National Guard Armory for the taping of a television talk show was denied.

Kristen Osborne, with NBC Universal, said MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes” show will be taped with Sanders Sunday and air on the network on Monday, March 13.

“Chris Hayes and Sen. Bernie Sanders will come together in McDowell County to discuss issues and challenges facing the community and also have an open dialogue with residents about their aspirations and possible solutions for the future,” she said. “The special, taping at Mount View High School in Welch, will present an opportunity for West Virginians to share their opinions and thoughts on a national stage.”

The taping will start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and air on MSNBC at 8 p.m. on Monday.

Registration is required. Anyone interested in attending should email [email protected].

Those interested in actively participating in the discussion can call 800-840-4580.

The show was set to tape at the Welch National Guard Armory in February, but Lawrence Messina, director of communications with the W.Va. Dept. of Military Affairs & Public Safety, said the Department of Defense (DOD) “does not permit the use of military facilities for political and election events and specifically includes town hall meetings as an example of such activities.”

In early May 2016, Sanders visited the Five Loaves & Two Fishes Food Bank in Kimball while he was campaigning for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

During his visit, Sanders talked about job creation, the need to construct new highways, the opioid addiction epidemic and other issues concerning McDowell County.
