Alpha to sell nine W.Va. mines in restructuring

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Over the weekend, two sources confirmed that the 79-person operation at the Edwight Surface Mine in Naoma and the Twilight Surface Mine partly located in Raleigh County are among the mines Alpha Natural Resources is selling as part of its bankruptcy restructuring plan.

The list doesn’t include Independence Coal Co.’s Tunnel Mine, where 13 employees received WARN notices in early October.

 The Green Valley mine in Nicholas County is also on the list, according to the list provided to The Register-Herald by two sources. Of the 16 mines the company placed for sale, nine are located in southern West Virginia, and the remaining are in Virginia, Kentucky and Illinois, according to the list.

Other properties slated for sale in the region are the Black Bear/Ben’s Creek mines, Rawl, Twin Star in Mingo County. The Cucumber Mine in McDowell County, Rock Spring in Wayne and Lincoln counties, Boone County’s Revolutionary/Independence Mine, the Twilight Surface Mine, partly in Boone County, and the Superior Mine in Logan County are also slated for sale, according to the list.

However, in a court filing last week, Alpha stated it may add or remove some proposed properties to the list.
