Alpha cuts nearly 100 more WV mine jobs

BECKLEY, W.Va. — For the second time in as many weeks, bankrupt Alpha Natural Resources slashed regional mining jobs Monday as the demand for coal continues to decline globally.

This time 93 positions were immediately eliminated at the Kingston Mining complex in Scarbro, a small community a mile and a half southwest of Oak Hill.

A company official said the No. 1 and No. 2 mines are each shutting down a section because demand for their coal has been cut in half. The No. 1 mine eliminated 49 jobs, No. 2 cut 40 jobs and four people at the processing plant were let go, the company said.

“It’s hard to say” when and if the miners would return to work, a company official said.

The Alpha official said WARN notices were not issued Monday since fewer than 100 employees were affected…
