Hey, dear publishers and editors, Happy Independence Day to all of you, your families and staffs!

Now down to serious business: Our 2013 WVPA Convention is coming up Thursday through Saturday,  Aug. 8-10, at the very popular Oglebay Resort in Wheeling. Have you registered yet? If not, don’t delay to do so; it’s important!

We WVPA Board members want it to be the best one yet, so I’m using this note to request your assistance. For it to be the best all of us have to participate, and one way you can is by e-mailing me back some information about your newspaper.

For my final presidential report, I need to know this: “What is your newspaper’s community service project?”

Do you or your staff help out with a local event, assist people in need, raise money for some special cause in your community, bestow special recognitions to local volunteers or achievers, etc.?

Of course you do some sort of community service for your home folks in your readership area. Likewise, WVPA took a step forward this association year by adopting the “Statewide Veterans Legacy” Project, which was worked up by primarily Glenville State College and WVU’s School of Journalism.

I, particularly, appreciate the kindness of you publishers and editors who have used these weekly Public Service Advertisements in your newspapers and participated in it in whatever way you could. This statewide effort strongly demonstrates that WVPA stands behind the courage, hard work and valor (and sometimes suffering) of our state’s Veterans of past wars and shows those returning heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan that “We newspaper people CARE.”

Thus, if I can get just one of your services to your community to mention (above and beyond putting your paper into print), you’d make my day, but, more importantly, help make a good speech that will ably show that “your newspaper CARES,” too.

Please use my private e-mail address for responding; [email protected]

Thanks for your confidence in our new Ex. Dir. Don Smith, our Board of Directors and me, your association’s president.
