Gazette-Mail names new sports editors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Gazette-Mail has announced the promotions of Derek Redd to sports editor and Nick Scala to assistant sports editor.

The veterans of the former Daily Mail and Gazette sports departments bring a combined 54 years of experience to the positions.

Redd has been an employee of Charleston Newspapers since 2012, when he joined the Charleston Daily Mail as a sportswriter. He covered Marshall University athletics for the Daily Mail and, following the creation of the Gazette-Mail, moved to covering local college athletics. Prior to joining Charleston Newspapers, Redd spent 12 years as a reporter and editor for several Florida newspapers. A Wheeling native, Redd is a 1999 graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He lives in Charleston with his wife, Katie, two stepdaughters and son.
