CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Daily Mail sports editor Chuck McGill has been voted the 2014 West Virginia Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, the organization announced Thursday. It is the second consecutive year McGill has received the honor, and the third win for him in the last four years.

The NSSA, based in Salisbury, N.C., will honor recipients of state and national honors at its annual awards weekend in June.

McGill, 34, is a Charleston native who joined the Daily Mail sports staff in 2009. He covered Marshall University athletics and the West Virginia Power for three years. He was promoted to sports editor and columnist in 2012.

Tom Verducci, who has been writing for Sports Illustrated since 1993, is the NSSA National Sportswriter of the Year. Mike “Doc” Emrick, who is the lead play-by-play announcer for National Hockey League games, is the National Sportscaster of the Year. It is Emrick’s second consecutive NSSA honor.

There will also be four NSSA Hall of Fame inductees at this year’s event: Bill Raftery, Dick Schaap, Hal McCoy and Lesley Visser. It is the largest single induction class in the NSSA’s 56-year history…
